Cho'Gath Build Guide

Cho'Gath Build Guide

Overview

Feeling hungry? Grab a Snickers. Or play Cho’Gath. The big bruiser’s main thing is that he becomes an even bigger bruiser as the game wears on -- combined with the ability to CC enemies, he’s a champion that can absorb a lot of damage for your team while still being able to dish out the damage himself in return. Keys to Remember About Cho’Gath

  1. Feast [R] is one of the strongest individual abilities in the game against single targets -- especially neutral objectives -- which will allow you to contest objectives even if your jungler is down or their Smite is on cooldown.

  2. While Rupture [Q] can be difficult to hit, it has a rather short cooldown, which means you can continue to spam it -- hitting even one on squishies can be enough justification for you to flash on top of them to Feast [R].

Strengths

Thanks to Feast [R], Cho’Gath has great scaling throughout the game with the extra HP gains. Feast [R] also gives your team a ton of objective control, as it allows him to easily secure or steal objectives, which means enemy teams need to be wary of both him and the jungler. He won’t have a ton of kill pressure in lane, but he can sustain for quite a while thanks to Carnivore [P] and still farm with relative ease with Vorpal Spikes [E] and Feral Scream [W] allowing him to clear waves even when he’s pushed back. The rest of his success in lane is going to be tied to how often he can land Rupture [Q] -- this will continue throughout the game, as it’s a strong CC ability that can hit multiple people, though it can be difficult to land. Cho’Gath can adopt his building depending on what his team needs -- sometimes you should build a little more towards damage, but mostly you’ll be committing to tanky items.

Weaknesses

He’s a huge target that will constantly be kited as he doesn’t have options for closing gaps outside of Flash. Sometimes that’s enough -- if you’re able to Flash on top of a squishy, a single Feast [R] can be extremely threatening to their lives. That said, enemies will typically be aware of what you can do once you’re in melee range, and if they are able to juke your Rupture [Q], you end up as a big punching bag for them to unload on. Cho’Gath will also need to pick the timings on his Feast [R] carefully -- using it on a minion will give him a long term health boost, but it will also remove a key damage ability to deal with all-ins from enemies.

Game Plan

  1. Early Game: You’ll want to play safely and farm at this phase -- you can trade a little bit, but you lack kill potential, so you just want to chip at them and heal back up with your passive.

  2. Mid Game: You can help secure objectives with Feast [R], and you have good gank setup if you’re able to land a Rupture [Q].

  3. Late Game: Depending on how many stacks you’ve gained at this point, you can serve as a huge wall for enemies to overcome.
