TFT Set 15: How to Play Mentor Janna!

TFT Set 15: How to Play Mentor Janna!

Overview

The premier reroll comp in the game, and perhaps the premier comp overall, is Janna reroll with Mentors and Strategists! With the fruit change this patch that makes Veteran a primary option -- this means it's much easier to force this comp this patch. We're going to tell you how to play it!

When to Play

  • You hit Janna or Kobuko early

  • You have a good econ opener

  • You have a Tear and don't know what else to play

How to Play

  • This is a level 6 reroll comp that focuses on 3-starring Janna and Kobuko. You hit level 6 and 50g and slow roll every turn. You should probably spike on 3-2, though, and try to roll for Janna2 and Kobuko2 so you can win Stage 3.

  • You can also open with Crystal Gambit lose streak into this comp -- it can be okay to cash out on 6 losses and roll to spike on 3-2 with this, but you should be okay with going to 9 losses, too.

  • It's generally not worth it to chase after other 3-stars in this comp unless you have A LOT of money or a lot of HP to spare.

  • Kobuko is arguably more important than Janna -- you really want to hit both of them before pushing levels, but if you hit Janna way ahead of Kobuko (let's say you only have 3 copies, for example), then it's okay to push levels.

  • It's almost never worth it to stop on Level 7 to roll for Senna or Udyr. You can justify Udyr if you didn't hit Kobuko3, though.

  • If you don't hit the Veteran Power Up on Janna, you should make a post on Twitter and tag Mortdog in it. Complain! But the comp isn't terrible even if you miss it -- you might not Top 4, but you can definitely still avoid going 7th or 8th.

  • Kobuko positioning is awkward -- if you have Best Defense, you generally want to keep him a bit more safe. But his true value is in the CC he provides, which means you can place in one left or one right of center (same side as enemy carry in the corner) to try to get the knockup on their damage dealers.

  • As you scale, you can play Ryze as a secondary carry or if you're ahead of tempo, you can look to push for level 9 and play around a strong 5-cost unit such as Zyra or Twisted Fate.

  • You want to follow the which you can read more in depth about here.

Stage

Level

2-X

If you can be strong early, you can play to win and follow the Standard Tempo timings. If you are weak, you can just maximize money as much as possible (do not buy EXP) and rush to 50g.

3-1

Level to 5 at this point if you didn’t the previous turn to help beat Krugs.

3-2

Level to 6 and roll until you’ve upgraded your core 2-cost units. You should dig for one copy of Yasuo (or Ryze if you are lucky) and one copy of Udyr as well to play 4 Mentor if your Janna already has Veteran.

3-X

The rest of this stage, you should try to build your economy back up to 50g, and then from there slow roll down to 50g for your units.

4-2

By this point in the game, if you are low on HP and still not winning, you may need to roll down to 10g every turn until you are one away from your core units, and then roll until 0. If you have a lot of HP left, you can just roll down to 50g and take your time finding your units.

5-2

Ideally you can push to level 8 by this turn, but sometimes you’ll get stuck on level 7 for the rest of Stage 5 or even the entire game.

6-X

You ideally want to push 9 at some point -- probably after you hit your 4-cost units, but if you can't build up the econ, you can just roll every turn for whatever upgrades you still need.

Win Conditions

  • You 3-star Janna and Kobuko on a good tempo (have them by 4-2) with some gold to spare so you can push for level 8 by Stage 5 and level 9 by stage 6.

  • Actually, that's pretty much always going to be your win condition. Level 9 with legendary units!
